Project HackerSpace – Updated 10/14/2010

Project Name:Maker Labs
Project Head: Tristan Bellotti
Project Start Date:10/1/2010
Project End Date: Hopefully never

Project Description:

A hackerspace is a place where people with common interests meet and work together.

My idea of a hackerspace would be a place where I can go to work on anything I might want to work on from electronics to testing group policy on server 2008. I would have desks for working on various projects, lockers to store un-finished projects, tools, and other personal items. Having 24 hour access to the space would be a huge benefit so that no matter what the hour a good idea doesn’t go to waste.

This is just a small amount of thoughts that are going through my head, I will add more later as I have time.

Overall Concept:

The overall concept would be a place that is high tech and green. High tech being a modern facility with modern tools. Green as in cutting the electric costs of normal computer and equipment electricity costs by implementing green technology such as wind, and solar energy and installing low power alternatives like LED lighting and such.

Conceptual Design:

Building:

The building from the outside will look like any ordinary building, although there maybe some wind turbines for electricity. It would be a good idea to put up a sign above the entrance to the building.

Reception area:

The reception area should be small by very cool and colorful where we show off some of the projects that were made by the group. The reception area should also have some seats for waiting people.

Locker Room(s):

There should be a room dedicated for small storage for things such as lunches, coats, and other small personal items. Another room would be dedicated to a little bigger of storage containers that could house bigger items such as small projects and tools.

Kitchen:

A hackerspace would not be nearly as cool with out a full blown kitchen to cook and eat eh healthy food. The kitchen would have the works with an oven, refrigerator, plenty of sinks, dish washer, toaster, blender, and a big space for eating.

Rack Space:

A space that you could use and place servers for testing purposes such as web servers, cisco testing, cloud computing, clustering, file serving, active directory, and more. Rack space would have power switches and routers so that you can customize the environment to your needs.

Bathroom / shower:

The space needs a bathroom but it would be a great idea to have a shower in case of accidental spill and long projects. Since the space would be open 24/7 projects with deadlines and contests may mean that members need to stay for long periods of time. A shower would allow member to take a shower to avoid the typical smell that some geeks are known for.

General Work area:

Work area is one of the most critical but simplest areas of the space. Work ares needs to be abundant but needs to be functional. I am thinking power outlets built into the counters with possibly Ethernet and some powered usb outlets. This way you can solder and power your laptop or any other personal gadgets that you may have with you.
